Dyslexia intervention provides structured, explicit instruction to help children develop the skills needed for reading and spelling success. Using a multisensory approach rooted in the science of reading, therapy targets phonological awareness, decoding, encoding (spelling), and reading fluency while supporting the language skills that contribute to literacy development. Our goal is to help students become more confident, capable readers and writers.

We use an Orton-Gillingham based program to target reading and spelling from single letters to multisyllabic words. With each new concept introduced, we practice spelling, handwriting, and reading at the single word, sentence, and paragraph levels.

Speech-language pathologists are best equipped to help children with dyslexia, as dyslexia is a language-based learning disability, which directly impacts the ability to understand and manipulate phonemes (letter sounds). SLPs are specially trained to understand all parts of language from phonemes to words, prefixes and suffixes to sentence structure, and vocabulary awareness to reading comprehension.

While dyslexia is often associated with difficulties in reading and spelling, many children with dyslexia also experience weaknesses in language skills that impact reading comprehension, vocabulary development, written expression, and academic learning. Reading is more than decoding words; it also requires understanding language, making inferences, and learning new vocabulary. By addressing both literacy and language skills with a speech-language pathologist, intervention can support stronger reading comprehension and long-term academic success.
